Cocktails in Film
I have been collecting cocktails in film since the 1980s.
The relationship between cinema and drinking culture goes back almost to the beginning of film itself, but it took on new glamour in the early 1930s.
After all, Hollywood has always understood that a well-timed drink can be as important to a scene as a well-timed close-up.
Even in the silent era, drinking scenes were common—especially in Charlie Chaplin films. During Prohibition, filmmakers often avoided the issue by setting drinking scenes in countries where alcohol remained legal.
1916 The Rink 🍿 ROLL THE CLIP →
Charlie Chaplin shows off some surprisingly impressive cocktail flair—pouring from two bottles at once, long-pouring what appears to be bitters, and tossing and catching his shaker tin. Then comes the actual shake. Chaplin starts flapping his arms like he's doing the chicken dance while somehow keeping the shaker almost perfectly still. He shakes everything except the cocktail.

Charlie Chaplin proves there’s more than one way to make a Highball—even if his way would horrify a bartender. 😂
A waiter brings Chaplin a tray with a bottle of brown liquor, a soda siphon, and a dainty little cocktail glass. Chaplin studies the setup, then ignores the obvious plan. Instead, he squirts the soda directly into the liquor bottle, essentially making his Highball right inside the bottle.
And the little glass? He finds another use for that: an ashtray for his cigar.
More than a century later, the scene is still a perfect example of Chaplin’s visual comedy: give him all the proper tools to make a drink, and watch him use every single one of them wrong.

Charlie Chaplin turns cocktail shaking into a brilliant visual gag. From behind, Chaplin appears to be overcome with emotion, his shoulders heaving as he stares at a photograph of his wife and reads the note she has left behind. It looks as though he's sobbing.
Then he turns around.
He's not crying at all—he's shaking a cocktail. 😂
The simple misdirection is classic Chaplin: without saying a word, he lets the audience assume one thing, then reveals something completely different. More than a century later, the cocktail shake still delivers the punchline.

Retired detective Nick Charles knows his cocktails—and apparently believes the bartenders at New York’s elegant Normandie Hotel could use a lesson.
While shaking his own Martini behind the bar, Nick explains that the secret is rhythm: “With a Manhattan you shake to fox-trot time. A Bronx to two-step time. A dry Martini you always shake to waltz time.”
Later, Nick meets up with his wife, Nora, who asks the inevitable question: “How many drinks have you had?” As a waiter arrives with two more Martinis, Nick casually replies, “This will make six Martinis.”
Nora doesn't scold him. She simply turns to the waiter and says, “All right. Will you bring me five more Martinis, Leo, and line them up right here.”

Good to know: Many cocktail blogs describe this scene happening in a "hotel bedroom," but it actually takes place downstairs at the resort's swanky dining lounge table.

The Ramos Gin Fizz is treated as the signature drink and defining calling card of femme fatale Coral "Dusty" Chandler (Lizabeth Scott).
Scene 1: The Sanctuary Club Bar (00:20:55 – 00:21:35)
Capt. "Rip" Murdock (Humphrey Bogart) is leaning against the bar, probing Louis the bartender (Charles Cane) for information about Johnny Drake, when Coral walks up:
Louis: "Good evening, Mrs. Chandler. A Ramos Gin Fizz?"
Coral: "Nobody can make 'em the way you can."
Louis whips up the drink and serves it to her across the bar ("Thank you very much"), prompting Bogart to slide in with his famous quip: "Cinderella, with a husky voice..." before they move over to a table.
Scene 2: Martinelli's Private Office (~00:34:20 – 00:34:45)
Later, club owner/mob boss Martinelli brings Murdock and Coral back to his private office for drinks and craps. Louis the bartender enters carrying a service tray:
Louis: "Ramos Gin Fizz, madam."
Coral: "Thank you."
Louis then serves Murdock his drink, giving him a quiet, loaded look to warn him that his whiskey has been spiked.

Cocktail hour turns into cocktail chaos in this hilarious scene starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor. Before the guests arrive for his daughter Kay’s engagement announcement party, Stanley Banks confidently makes a big batch of Martinis, telling his wife, “That’s all what everybody drinks at these things, ya know, Martinis.” He fills an entire tray, ready to pass them around the moment the doorbell rings. There’s just one problem: everyone wants something else.
Soon Stanley is trapped in the kitchen juggling orders for Old Fashioneds, Tom Collinses, Mint Juleps, Bourbon & Waters, Frozen Daiquiris, and Rum & Cokes—while that beautiful tray of Martinis waits for somebody, anybody, to drink one.
It’s not only a great comedy scene; it’s a wonderful snapshot of 1950s home cocktail culture, when hosting a party.

Marilyn Monroe turns a Martini into one of the funniest cocktail scenes in the film simply because she has absolutely no idea what a Martini is.
When Richard asks what she'd like to drink, she starts with gin and soda, realizes that doesn't sound right, and asks him how people drink gin. He explains that gin and vermouth make a Martini. That sounds good to her, so she orders one—“a big, tall one.”
Richard obliges, pouring what looks like an alarming amount of gin into an enormous glass and proudly presenting her with her “big, tall Martini.” She takes a sip, likes it, but thinks it could use a little more sugar. Richard strongly advises against that. She seems puzzled and tells him that back home in Denver, they put sugar in Martinis.

Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando) introduces Sister Sarah (Jean Simmons) to a fictional cocktail he seems to have made up on the spot called Dulce de leche after she orders plain milk in a Cuban bar.
Masterson’s orders in Spanish.
Sister Sarah: What did you order?
Sky Masterson: Dulce de leche. Dulce is the Spanish word for "sweet”. De means "of' and leche means "milk.” Sweet of milk.
Sister Sarah: Don't they serve it plain?
Sky Masterson: Well, only in the morning. It has to do with the heat. At night they put a kind of preservative in it.
Sister Sarah: That's interesting. What do they use?
Sky Masterson: Bacardi.
Sister Sarah: Doesn't that have alcohol in it?
Sky Masterson: Well, just enough to keep the milk from turning sour.
After sucking down two, Sister Sarah says, "You know, this would be a wonderful way to get children to drink milk.” 😂
It’s the beginning of a night drinking more Dulce de leches and Cuban dancing. What could go wrong?

Ten-year-old Patrick Dennis may be one of the youngest cocktail instructors in movie history—and he certainly knows his Martinis.
When Mr. Babcock visits, Patrick politely offers him a drink:
PATRICK: “Would you care for a Martini, Mr. Babcock? Dry or extra dry? ... I’ll make them like I do for Mr. Woolcott. Stir, never shake. Bruises the gin. Would you care for an olive? Auntie Mame says olives take up too much room in such a little glass.”
Naturally, Auntie Mame walks in at exactly the right moment and turns the situation around on Mr. Babcock:
AUNTIE MAME: “I wonder if it makes the best first impression on a sensitive young mind... to see you drinking during business hours.”
As a flustered Mr. Babcock tries to explain that Patrick made the Martini, Mame cuts him off with the perfect defense:
“Mr. Babcock! Knowledge is power!”

Jan Handzlik performed the scene as 12-year-old Patrick. Handzlik had already played Patrick opposite Rosalind Russell in the Broadway production of Auntie Mame before reprising the role for the 1958 film. Jan later became an attorney in Los Angeles.
I first had the pleasure of speaking with him in 2009, and in 2022 he visited me at the Bourbon O Bar on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. In December 2023, we even enjoyed an evening together at the Magic Castle in Los Angeles—a pretty wonderful full-circle ending to a cocktail scene I had been fascinated with for years.

This James Bond film helped revive the Mojito with a bang.
In one of the movie’s most memorable scenes,
Halle Berry’s Jinx makes her legendary entrance
from the ocean in an orange bikini and walks toward
Bond, who has been admiring the view from the beach.
After a little Bond-style flirting, he offers her the drink in his hand: “Mojito? You should try it.” She does, and the Mojito suddenly gets nearly as much attention as the orange bikini.

"It is, isn't it? Too bad it's lost on everybody else."
"Mojito? You should try it."
"Too strong for you?"
"I could learn to like it... if I had the time."
The scene helped put the Mojito back into mainstream pop culture—and onto bar menus everywhere in the early 2000s.
Bar patrons started ordering them like crazy, which presented one small problem: 99% of bars didn't have mint.
For bartenders, the Mojito revival had officially begun. 🍃🍹

The Vesper is a fictional cocktail first seen in the
seventh chapter of Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel.
In a casino off the top of Bond’s head, he makes up a no-name cocktail, asking the barman for:
“Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka,
half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well
until it’s ice-cold, then add a large, thin slice of
lemon peel. Got it?” Later, he names his liquid
creation after his love interest and double
Russian agent, Vesper Lynd.
Good to know: In case you try to make this cocktail,
Kina Lillet was a French aperitif wine
containing a distinct bitter quinine component.
It was reformulated in 1985/1986, stripped of its
heavy quinine bitterness, and renamed Lillet Blanc.
Bartenders widely consider Cocchi Americano the closest modern substitute for the historic, discontinued Kina Lillet.
