Piadas de bar

When it comes to finding the best shoes for bartenders, veteran barkeeps have an old saying: Invest heavily in your bed and your shoes, because if you’re not in one, you’re in the other.

I can tell you there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question: What are the best bartender shoes? Because when it comes to shoes—and feet—one size definitely does not fit all.

The bottom line is that finding the best bartender shoes comes down to two things: the bar you work in and the feet you brought to work.

1. Think about your bar first. Do you work indoors, outdoors, or both? Days, nights, or both? Are you in a polished hotel or corporate environment where your shoes are part of your appearance, or a neighborhood bar? Does management require slip-resistant shoes? Will you be walking through a greasy kitchen to pick up food? Are your shoes on public display, or hidden beneath the hem of your black pants?

2. Now think about what your feet need. Are they narrow, regular, wide, or extra-wide? Do you have weak ankles and prefer the support of a boot? Flat feet? Bunions? Plantar fasciitis flare-ups? Need a roomy toe box? Are slip-ons your jam? Do you have two different-sized feet and actually need two pairs of shoes?

You get the idea. You’re smart. You know your feet, and you know your bar.

And remember what you're asking those feet to do. Bartenders spend entire shifts, and double shifts, twisting, walking, pivoting, lifting, bending, reaching, and occasionally discovering that someone has turned the floor into a lovely mixture of water, citrus juice, simple syrup, and regret.

Your feet are literally the foundation of your shift. Each one contains 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. That's a lot of moving parts to punish for eight or ten hours because you bought the cute shoes.

Let me help you find the best bartender shoes for YOU—and hopefully save you some sore feet, time, and money along the way.

The Best Bartender Shoes Have Five Qualities

  1. Slip-Resistant Soles

  2. Water Resistance

  3. Support

  4. Comfort

  5. The Best Fit for Your Feet

1. Why Slip-Resistant Soles?

Allow me to start with my favorite bartender analogy: The best bartenders work like swans. On the surface, they project calm, effortless confidence. Underneath, they're paddling like hell.

Your shoes need to keep up.

Bar and restaurant floors get wet, sticky, dirty, and greasy, while bartenders' feet are constantly walking, pivoting, twisting, and changing direction. The last thing you need to think about is whether your shoes will hold the floor.

Bartenders already have ten things running through their heads at once.

Their feet shouldn't be number eleven.

I'll spare you the gory details of the accidents I've witnessed when bartenders weren't wearing proper slip-resistant shoes.

Hint: There are a surprising number of sharp—and potentially sharp—objects behind a bar that can turn a slip into a trip to the hospital.

How Do You Know If a Shoe Is Slip-Resistant?

THE SLIPPERY SLOPE: Look for footwear specifically labeled slip-resistant. Not anti-slip. Not non-slip. SLIP-RESISTANT.

Don't assume a rubber sole, athletic tread, or words like "good traction" mean the shoe is suitable for wet bar floors.

ASTM: This is where things get scientific. ASTM F2913 provides a standardized method for testing whole-shoe slip performance,

while ASTM F3445 establishes performance requirements for slip-resistant footwear. The standards were updated in 2024, so you may see F2913-24 and F3445-24 on newer work shoes. ASTM periodically reviews and revises standards as testing methods and safety knowledge evolve.

THE SCIENTIFIC SOLE: There's a reason service shoes don't have the same tread as running shoes, hiking boots, or basketball shoes.

Slip-resistant work soles are engineered to provide traction on contaminated floors.
The science behind slip-resistant shoes relies on optimizing physics, material science, and fluid dynamics—specifically maximizing friction and preventing hydroplaning between the outsole and the floor. Tread patterns contain numerous small channels or hexagonal and square shapes designed to help move liquid away from beneath the sole.

THE SCIENCE ➔ When your foot hits a wet or greasy floor, the tread needs to help move that contaminant out from under the shoe so the outsole can make better contact with the floor and create traction. In other words, those funny little shapes on the bottom of your work shoes have a job, too.

Can you guess the sole treads?

The point? Every one of these soles was designed for a different job. A basketball shoe needs to grip a court. A hiking shoe needs to bite into dirt and rock. A grass-court tennis shoe needs traction without destroying the court. A bartender's shoe needs to grip a wet, greasy floor.

Choose the sole for the job—not just the shoe you thought looked the coolest.

Softening New Doc's
Good news! In 2018, Dr. Martens introduced three slip-resistant styles, making Docs a serious contender in the search for the best bartender shoes.

Like all Docs, they'll need to be broken in... ummm, I mean, softened. 😁 That's what Dr. Martens calls it on their own break-in guide. Eyeball their tips before wearing a brand-new pair for an entire shift.

I can tell you from experience that, with a little time, Docs really do mold to your feet. Tip: Speed up the softening process by wearing them often at first. I owned a pair for 20 years, but with full-time bartending, you may only get 10 years out of them, so don't let the roughly $170 price tag scare you. That's only about $17 a year for a bar shoe that molds to your feet and eventually fits like an old friend.

Dr. Martens doesn't have an official Amazon store, so I've linked their logo to a third-party Amazon seller where you can browse their slip-resistant styles. Sizing Tip: The company recommends thick over thin socks. They sell organic cotton blend Unisex Double Doc Socks, which they recommend for breaking in. I always wore Merino wool hiking socks.

The three styles include:

- Unisex black stitching in place of yellow. SHOP →
- Unisex Dark Tan SHOP →

1460 Slip-Resistant Leather Lace-Up Boots. SHOP →
2976 Slip-Resistant Leather Chelsea Boots  SHOP →

- These will probably require a boot stretcher and leather stretch spray. I found a Reddit thread for you.
