Simon Difford is responsible for uniting the international cocktail community. He started Difford’s Guide Class magazine in August 1997 and with Difford’s passion for the cocktail culture, it grew from 16 pages to 150 monthly glossy pages, but then the Internet took over and he was forced to sell. Difford was able to take it back over in 2009 and in 2010 won a Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Award. In 2014, the printed magazine was laid to rest, and now everything is online. It’s highly recommended to join his newsletter to receive updates. The information on this site is rich and immense.
Imbibe launched in 2005 and immediately started winning awards. This drink magazine (and now you can get it digital online) quenched a thirst for the growing craft cocktail movement at the time. Modern Drunkard Magazine
Modern Drunkard Magazine is a little on the crusty side, but can be entertaining—a junk food drinking mag, if you will. Boston saloon owner Hiram Flannery Rich started it in 1905 when a critic from the Boston Globe gave his saloon a bad review. Rich handwrote ten rebuttal newsletter issues, then handed them out to his regulars to read. It was a hit so Rich started a regular newsletter that was first called Genteel Drunkards Drink at Hiram Rich’s Real Irish Saloon, but after the Great Fire of 1909, he launched a Boston-wide edition, renaming it the Genteel Drunkard. The first editions were crude, obscene, and controversial to the point where the Women’s Christian Temperance Union with their hatchets raided the magazine office four times. This made the publication even more popular. During Prohibition, the magazine was renamed Modern Drunkard Magazine and would give a list of passwords to speakeasies. Today, it’s an online magazine, and you can browse online issues in their archive.
