Cocktails
are an American invention and
cinema is a well loved pastime in America. This
collection combines both. Our most famous toast, Here’s
looking at you kid, came from the lips of Humphrey Bogart
in the 1942 film, Casablanca. Also, in Casablanca I believe
the first liqueur brand was mentioned; Cointreau. In 1955, I believe
the first spirit brand was mentioned by Marlon Brando in Guys
& Dolls; Bacardi. In 1962 James Bond made the Vodka Martini
and Smirnoff vodka part of our cocktail verbiage from the
film Dr. No, and Tom Cruise jumpstarted flair & performance
bartending all over the world when he played a Flair Bartender
in the 1988 film, Cocktail.
I
have collected these cocktails seen and mentioned in film for
years. Films
showing characters drinking beer, wine, Champagne toasts, and
countless shots are not recorded on this page (there are way too
many!). This collection of Silver Screen Cocktails is
dedicated to films that actually mention a specific cocktail,
show a specific cocktail, or have a bar setting. I also steer
away from drunken or alcoholism-type films in the collection.
You can find many of these in articles called Soused Cinema
from Garv that writes for
Modern Drunkard Magazine. He also has a Boose
Movies Blogspot.
If you run across anything that I'm
looking for please email me!
I've
included a lot of YouTube links so that you can watch the scenes
talked about. This symbol
means that you can listen to a clip. Also, I discovered that 95%
of the cocktails in the Ben Reed book, Hollywood
Cocktails are incorrect, so I'm in the process of watching
the films from 1928 to the 1950s. I will remove them as I go.
Cheers!

1917
1917 The Adventurer;
In his 62nd film, Charlie Chaplin makes what appears to be a Whiskey
and Soda. But of course he makes it in "Chaplin style"
by squirting the soda into the bottle then drinking from the bottle
then using the cocktail glass as an ashtray. Later Charlie makes
a cocktail by taking all the used cocktail glasses and pouring
their remains into one. A butler popping open a Champagne
bottle is seen as well. The entire movie can be viewed here.
To see just the scene mentioned above click on the image below.
1921
The Idle Class; Even
though a cocktail name is not mentioned or recognized, there
is a final and funny scene that shows Charlie Chaplin making
a cocktail.
This
film was only 32 minutes long and it was the first film
that Charlie Chaplin wrote and directed (and starred).
Click on the image to see the scene on Youtube.
1928
Manhattan Cocktail
This is a silent film. I haven't watched
it yet, but plan to so that I can see if Manhattans are
drank in the film. I'm curious because America was in prohibition
from 1920-1933 and the posters show a cocktail glass.
The story line is about a small town couple moving to Manhattan
to make it big on Broadway.
1930
Anna
Christie;
While not a real cocktail, I still felt this is special
because it was Greta Garbo's first line in a talking movie.
She says, "Gimme a whiskey. Ginger ale on the side.
And don’t be stingy, baby." Click on the
image to see the clip on youtube.
You have to understand that the crossover from silent films
to a talkie was extremely scary for actors at this time.
Most thought talkies would never be a hit and their careers
over.
1934
Chained; Joan Crawford drinks a
Sherry Flip.
The Thin
Man;
William Powell and Myrna Loy drink Knickerbockers
and Martinis. William Powell also instructs the Bartender
how to make drinks, "The important thing is the
rhythm. Always have rhythm in your shaking. Now a Manhattan
you always shake to fox-trot time, a Bronx to two-step time,
a dry martini you always shake to waltz time."
You can see a video of this here.
1935
After Office Hours; Clark Gable
and Constance Bennett drink Dry Martinis
with one olive.
Top Hat; A Horse's Neck
is ordered, but doesn't specify which kind.
Remember
Last Night; Sidecars, Champagne, Wine, and
Scotch & Sodas. Interesting how
they made created a girl cocktail glass poster.
1936
His Brother's Wife; Robert Taylor drinks a Gin
Rickey.
My Man Godfrey; David Niven
plays a butler and helps himself to Vodka
Martinis.
1937
Personal Property; Robert Taylor
drinks a Champagne Cocktail.
Every Day’s a Holiday;
Mae West plays the charming Peaches O'Day. The movie is
set in 1899.
This is the movie she introduced the famous one-liner,
"You should get out of those wet clothes and into
a Dry Martini."
It's been said that Bellinis
are drunk in the film, but I have not seen it to confirm.
However, Bellinis use white
peach puree and her name is Peaches so it may be true.
Hard to believe that she was 44 years old when this
film was made.
The Awful Truth; In the first scene Cary Grant invites a man
over for Egg Nog. Cary pushes
a cart with a bowl of Egg Nog
with liquour bottles underneath so it's assumed that the
Egg Nog is spiked. He then sprinkles nutmeg on top and passes
them out.
Another scene a lady says she's going down to the bar to
see Joe the bartender. A nightclub shows a giant Champagne
glass with balloons blowing on top to look like bubbles
set behind the orchestra. You can see the nightclub scene
below.
Cary and his date drink Champagne.
Cary makes himself a drink that looks like a highball
of some type. More Champagne
is drunk.
Topper; Cary Grant and Constance
Bennett hop four nightclubs in the first 10 minutes of the
film. The fierst one is the Rainbow Lounge. The scene can
be seen here
on YouTube.
They drink Champagne throughout
the film. Mumm's Champagne
is shown many times. Later on, a tray of "Cocktails"
are brought to the room. You don't actually know what the
cocktails are until a few scenes later when Constance holds
one up to Cary Grant and says, "Here,
have a Pink Lady." You can see the whole scene
here.
You can see the Mumm's Champagne
in the middle of
this clip on Youtube.
Jezebel; Jezebel is set
in New Orleans in 1852. New Orleans is mentioned many times.
The first scene in this film a man pulls his carriage
next to the Louis-House to "have
a ball." I can only assume he means highball.
They walk into the very elegant bar. While there a man says,
A gentleman doesn't mention the name of a lady in a
bar." Another says, "Gentlemen, let's
have another drink!"
The next scene shows a cocktail party with many trays of
drinks being served butler-style. Bette Davis asks, "Whiskey,
Uncle Billy?" She also makes a toast.
The third scene shows men in a meeting and a tray of cocktails
are brought to the table. The word Mint Julep isn't used,
but it's quite evident the tray has Mint
Juleps. Mint Juleps
are drank by Henry Fonda throughout the film.
There's a line in the film that says, "I like my
convictions like my whiskey, undiluted."
Jezebel won Academy Awards for Best Actress and Best
Supporting Actress.
It was nominated for Best Picture, Best Cinematography,
and Best Music (scoring).
1939

Champagne and Pink Gin.
Remember?; Greer Garson, Lew Ayres, and Robert
Taylor drink Imperials.

Actor), and screenwriter Donald Ogden Stewart (Best Adapted
Screenplay). It also received Academy Award nominations
for George Cukor (Best Director), Katharine Hepburn (Best
Actress), Ruth Hussey (Best Supporting Actress), and Best
Picture (Joseph L. Mankiewicz - producer).
Angels Over Broadway; Rita Hayworth and Douglas Fairbanks,
Jr. drink Rob Roys.
1941
San Antonio Rose; Shemp Howard tries to slip
someone a mickey in a Sherry Cobbler.
The Lady Eve; Henry Fonda owns
the fictitious Pike's Ale. A bartender
is asked for the ale, but tells the servers he's out and proceeds
to make Martinis stirred not shaken
with a julep strainer. The shape of the Martini glasses are interesting
because they resemble glases from the early 2000s. Barabra Stanwyck
holds up a mirror to view behind her. It has the bar in the background
and later brandy is ordered and Champagne
is drunk.
The Man Who Came To Dinner; Ann Sheridan drinks
a Mint Julep poolside.
Phantom Submarine; Anita Louise and others drink
Seabreezes.
Moon Under Miami; Miss Charming™
wants you to know that she watches hours upon hours of film to
put together this page and wants you to know that she enjoyed
this one. Most vintage films don't make any sense when compared
to circumstances and modern attitudes, but this one made the "charming
cut." Champagne, gin, and Scotch
are seen in this film.
1942
Across the Pacific; Humphrey Bogart orders two
Planter Punches.
Woman of the Year; In the

in the drinks. Spencer talks about how in college he made
drinking bets with games.
Champagne is served at a cocktail
party, Spencer drinks white wine
with Katherine's father, and a tray of red
wine is brought out for a wedding toast.

But what it does to the mind? It tosses the sandbags overboard
so the balloon can soar. Suddenly I'm above the ordinary. I'm
competent. I'm walking a tightrope over Niagara Falls. I'm one
of the great ones. I'm Michaelangelo, molding the beard of Moses.
I'm Van Gogh painting pure sunlight. I'm Horowitz, playing the
Emperor Concerto. I'm John Barrymore before movies got him by
the throat. I'm Jesse James and his two brothers, all three of
them. I'm W. Shakespeare. And out there it's not Third Avenue
any longer, it's the Nile. Nat, it's the Nile and down it moves
the barge of Cleopatra.

Father of the Bride; This is a great clip! Spencer Tracy

Taylor) and makes a full tray of Martinis because he says that
this is the cocktail that everyone is drinking. Well, just when
he's about to leave the kitchen to offer them to his guests someone
guests walk in and order different drinks. Spencer Tracy ends
up playing bartender for the whole party and never gets to socialize.
Drinks made and mentioned are; Old Fashioneds,

finally pours his Martini into the jar.
1955
Guys and Dolls; As far
as I know, this is the first time that a brand name is mentioned
in a scene. Marlon Brando orders a Milk
Punch (Dolce de leche) served in a coconut cup for
Jean Simmons and himself. He tells her that at night they
put a preservative in the milk and when Jean Simmons asks
what they use, Marlon Brando answers, Bacardi.
Jean Simmons asks if Bacardi has alcohol in it and Marlon
Brando says, "Well, just enough to stop the milk
from turning sour." They drink six of them.
The Seven Year Itch; Marilyn
Monroe and Tom Ewell drink Martinis,
Champagne, and Tom Collins. She
also mentions that she watered the plants with a cocktail
shaker and dunks a potato chip in Champagne.
Tom Ewell also says that he had a peanut butter sandwich
and 2 Whiskey Sours for breakfast.
Kiss Me Deadly; A classic
noir film with drinking. Check out the home bar and those
antique shakers in the back!
1956
High Society; Frank
Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Grace Kelly drink Champagne all
though this film (Mumm's is seen). The bar you see is a hide-away
bar built into the bookshelves of the library. Also drank are
Martinis, Sherry and Bing Crosby gives Grace Kelly a Stinger.
Bus Stop; Marilyn Monroe
drinks shots of whiskey in
the saloon where she works.
The first scene she drinks it's just tea because it's part

King Creole; Elvis Presley plays a nightclub
bus boy turned nightclub singer. Many drinks and bars are seen,
but not mentioned. The film was shot in New Orleans.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof; Paul Newman
has a Hot Toddy and many whiskeys.
Auntie Mame; The 2nd scene
of the film is at a cocktail party. Auntie Mame (Rosalind
Russell) descends the stairs talking about how someone is
on their way with a gallon of gin.
This is because the film begins in the prohibition year
of 1928 (it spans about 20 years). Auntie Mame holds
2 tall amber colored cocktails with a cherry on the bottom
and a lemon slice garnish (I don't know what they are).
Martinis are seen and drunk
and one lady in particular is holding a
Martini that has a long handle. It almost looks
like she's holding a glass ladle but the bowl is a Martini
glass. A maid says Mame has thrown 13 cocktail parties and
one was cancelled because the bootlegger didn’t show.
Mame tells her nephew, Patrick to write down
all the words he hears that he doesn't know while at the
cocktail party. Two of them are bathtub
gin and blotto (the
others are libido, inferiority complex, stinko, free love,
monkey glands, and homosexual).
The morning after the party Mame asks Patrick
to, "Run along to Ito (the butler) and tell him to
bring me a light breakfast, black coffee, and a Side
Car.
Patrick makes a Martini
for a visiting guest. He asks if he would like it
dry or extra dry. There is a complete scene of Patrick
(Jan Handzlik) pouring the gin in a glass pitcher then educating
the man by saying, “Stir never shake, it bruises the
gin. He then swirls vermouth around inside a Martini glass,
pours it out then pours the stirred gin into the glass.
He serves it without an olive but asks, “Would you
like an olive? Auntie Mame says it takes up too much room
in the drink.” Click on
the clip to see the scene.
Mame's wealthy boyfriend (and soon to be husband) from
Georgia serves a tray of drinks in silver cups. One can
one assume they are Mint Juleps.
Champagne is
mentioned and drunk. Years go by and a grown Patrick’s
introduces Mame to his girlfriend and Mame offers her a
Cognac or Drambuie.
When Mame visits Patrick’s girlfriend’s
family (somewhere in the south) her father makes his special
Daiquiri in a giant half-gallon shaker. There are limes
and honey sitting on the bar. The father talks about Cuban
rum and his “secret” ingredient in his
Daiquiri. He asks Mame to guess what it is. Mame says, “Chocolate
Ice Cream.” The secret ingredient is honey in place
of sugar. Mame hates it and when no one is looking throws
the liquid contents over her shoulder. When the family visits
Mame, she she tells the father that she has a special drink
too but won’t be sharing the secret. She says they
are called The Flaming Mame
and the trick is to drink them up fast before the flame
goes away. She serves the drinks in tall metal flutes and
lights each one by one with fireplace matches then asks,”Is
everyone lit?” Later whiskey served in tall glasses
without ice.
One line in the film goes:
Agnes Gooch: Spirits do the most horrible thing to me. I'm
not the same person!
Mame: What's wrong with that?
Agnes Gooch: Will it mix with Dr. Pepper?
Mame: He'll love it! Drink!
Auntie Mame won an Academy Award for Best Actress in
a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best
Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Cinematography, Best
Film Editing, and Best Picture.

Mint Julep and she orders him something in Italian.
The bartender then sets an Italian bottle of Sweet Vermouth
and a bottle of Kentucky whiskey on the bar. During their
conversation Gable pours some vermouth into her Mint Julep,
which is odd, but maybe it's supposed to mean that he's combining
both of their cultures?
1961
Come September; This film was the
first film to be shown on transcontinental and intercontinental
flights. Rock Hudson drinks a lot of Champagne
in this film. A bird even gets drunk on a glass of it.
There's also a scene with a young Bobby Darin where Rock

Cognac and Champagne. Shirley
MacLaine orders Pernod and peppermint
tea. The bartender pours ice water on the Pernod like
you do with Absinthe. Many other drinks are seen. Shirley
won an Oscar for best actress and the film won best cinematography.
I'm including this film because when you mix the Pernod
and ice water together I believe that classifies it as a cocktail.

Lewis orders an Alaskan Polar Bear Heater.
It's a crazy drink and can be seen
here about 3:30 minutes into the clip.
1963 Come Blow Your Horn; Frank Sinatra orders Rum

things that just aren’t done, such as drinking Dom
Perignon ’53 above the temperature of 38 degrees
Fahrenheit.
On Goldfinger’s front porch Bond is offered a Mint
Julep, adding it’s “traditional but satisfying.”
Bond accepts, and tells the man getting the drink, “Sour
mash, but not too sweet, please.”
Sean Connery has three Brandies, one
Port Wine, one Vodka Martini shaken not stirred with a lemon

the name.
